A FINE 20-BORE FLINTLOCK SINGLE-SHOT SPORTING-RIFLE WITH GILT MOUNTS, no visible serial number,
German, circa 1750, with octagonal swamped 27in. barrel, concentric circles engraved to the muzzle-flat, brass dove-tailed fore-sight bead situated within a field of rococo shells, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight with additional folding leaf and carved and pierced tail, further rococo scroll and shells engraved to the squared solid top-tang and extending onto the breech area, curved bevel-edged lock signed within and beneath the frizzen-spring 'PERNS DORFFER, AN ANSFACH', and deeply relief carved with a scene of a stag being brought down by hunting dogs, lozenge shaped pan, re-faced frizzen carved on the front with rococo scrolls and a central grotesque mask, relief acanthus leaf carving to the hammer (top-jaw and screw probable replacements), walnut full-stock carved with borders around the barrel, ramrod channel and furniture, the majority of the remaining surface area carved in relief with loose flowing vines, iron square socket for additional peep-sight (missing) to wrist, angular raised plain cheek-piece, sliding patchbox to right hand rear of butt mounted with a rococo relief carved radiused gilded lid, border and rococo scroll engraved gilded heel-plate with relief carved rococo top-spur, en-suite trigger-guard bow with raised gilded tang, rococo relief carved and engraved gilded sideplate, turned and carved gilded ramrod thimbles and relief carved and gilded nose-cap, replacement ramrod, some wear to the gilded finish
