A SCARCE 4-BORE PERCUSSION LIGHTWEIGHT SINGLE-BARREL SPORTING OR PIGEON-GUN, no visible serial number,
circa 1855 and probably for the sport of live pigeon shooting, with tapering twist-iron 37 1/4in. browned barrel, moulded short sighting rib at breech with short borderline engraved steeple to the front terminating in an engraved starburst, the rib signed 'NEWTON, KING ST. MANCHESTER', bead fore-sight, squared border engraved breech, borderline engraved top-tang, white metal plug, border engraved bar-action lock signed 'NEWTON', chequered walnut half-stock (losses to right hand top-edge of fore-end), iron heel-plate with short top-spur, white metal oval escutcheon to underside of stock, iron furniture (some corrosion), single barrel key with oval iron escutcheon and moulded horn fore-end tip with no provision for ramrod
