AN ASTONISHING AND RARE OVERSIZE JAPANESE AIKUCHI DAGGER,
believed late Edo period and possibly for diplomatic presentation, with slightly curved 24in. spear-point blade (large patches of polished pitting), 'rolling-cloud' hamon, deeply carved 'horimono' of a warrior riding an oriental dragon to the left hand side of the blade, the reverse deeply carved with the bough of a cherry-tree in blossom, yellow metal 'habaki', laquered hilt embedded with four colour gold flecks, central large circular gold embossed panels depicting creatures from the Japanese zodiac, a rat on the left and a pig on the right hand side, blackened iron 'fuchi' and 'kashira' gilded with vines and flowers, the scabbard en-suite with the hilt but with five zodiacal panels each side depicting the rest of the animals from the Japanese zodiac, many with highlights picked out in contrasting gold colours or enamels and an en-suite 'kojiri' and 'kurikata', small losses to the laquer at the hilt-end, complete with embroidered silk storage bag
