A GOOD JAPANESE CROSS-HEADED SPEAR 'KAMA-YARI',
possibly mid 18th century, with central 7in. double-edged blade swelling at the tip and twin 2 1/2in. side-blades with a slight forwards curve, iron conical ferrule above a gilded brass pierced socket, the front fifth of the wood shaft covered in laquer embedded with flakes of mother-of-pearl, rattan binding at the intersection, the remainder of polished hardwood capped with a pierced iron butt-cap, the whole 74 1/2in. overall COMPLETE WITH its rare 'saya' or blade cover, of wood covered in a naturalistic stippled laquer, generally good condition, the 'saya' with edge splits and some small losses to the shaft laquer
