AN EARLY 12-BORE LEFAUCHEUX PATENT UNDERLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED PINFIRE SPORTING GUN, serial no. 2898,
30in. bold damascus barrels, rib engraved 'J. LANG. COCKSPUR STREET. LONDON.', the barrel flats engraved with indistinct script, action incorporating later single-bite pivot-opening breech action of Casimir Lefaucheux's French 1834 patent, forward facing underlever, action bar marked '933', carved fences, non-rebounding sidelocks with dolphin hammers of pinfire form, bold acanthus scroll engraving with beaded borders, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening and traces of original finish, 14 1/8in. stock, cross-pin fore-end with minor repair, weight 6lb. 15oz.

Provenance: Completed in August 1864 for 'Norris Esq.', this gun previously formed part of the Atkin Grant & Lang collection. The records describe it as 'a double breech loading bar gun in 12 bore'.

Lang, possibly in conjunction with actioner E.C. Hodges, introduced the Lefaucheux design to Great Britain after the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was the first commercially produced design of breech loading gun to use the percussion cap ignited tubed cartridge
