A CASED, PRESENTATION .31 PERCUSSION FIVE-SHOT REVOLVER, MODEL '1849 POCKET', serial no. 31058,
for 1852, with octagonal 6in. barrel, the breech end signed 'SAML. COLT', with engraved band at muzzle, scroll engraved breech-end, plain cylinder with roll-engraved scene (cleaned and faint, some pitting), open scroll engraved iron frame, silver-plated scroll engraved brass trigger-guard and grip-straps, the back-strap marked 'HON C.W.W. FITZWILLIAMS TO D.J. DICKEY' smooth highly figured walnut one-piece grip and articulated under-barrel loading lever, COMPLETE WITH its original mahogany storage case compartmented and lined in maroon velvet (faded to brown) and accessories including a Colt patent 'Eagle' powder flask, an Eley Bros cap-tin and a brass ball and bullet mould
Provenance: Research indicates 'Hon. C.W.W. Fitzwilliam' to be Charles William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam (1786 - 1857), 3rd Earl Fitzwilliam in the peerage of England, and 5th Earl Fitzwilliam in the peerage of Ireland. He was three-time President of the Royal Statistical Society, and President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in its inaugural year. It is unclear as to the identity of D.J. Dickey.
