ARMY & NAVY C.S.L. 12-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 2152, 28 7/8in. black powder damascus barrels (heavily pitted) , the rib engraved 'CONVERTED BY ARMY & NAVY C.S.L. LONDON.', '2' and with 'BOSS & CO. 73. ST JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, Jones patent rotary underlever, carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks, border and acanthus scroll engraving, the lockplates engraved 'ARMY & NAVY C.S.L.', 13 1/2in. figured stock including steel buttplate engraved 'No.2'

Provenance: This gun was to vendor's grandfather by Sir Claud Vere Cavendish Hobart, 2nd Baronet.

Lt.-Col. Sir Claud Vere Cavendish Hobart, 2nd Bt. (1870 - 1949) was the son of the first Baronet and Hon. Julia Trollope.

Lt.-Col. Sir Claud Vere Cavendish Hobart, 2nd Bt. usually went by his middle name of Vere. He fought in the Uganda Campaign between 1897 and 1899, and was mentioned in despatches. He fought in the Boer War and was DAAG of the South African Field Force between 1899 and 1900. He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Grenadier Guards. He was decorated with the award of the Companion, Distinguished Service Order. He was Gold Staff Officer for the Coronation in 1902. He was Gold Staff Officer for the Coronation in 1911. He fought in the First World War, and was mentioned in despatches three times. He was invested as a Officer, Order of the British Empire. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 8th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment.

Other Notes: Boss & Co. have a gun No. 2152 recorded as a 12-bore rotary underlever made as No.2 of a pair for a Richard Bright Esq. in 1864. There is no mention of Army & Navy in the records. It is likely that Army & Navy modified the gun at a later date
