French contract circa 1870, with 21 1/2in. barrel, German proofs, block and blade fore-sight, ladder rear-sight, plain action, the left hand side signed 'PEABODY'S PATENT JULY 22 1862, MAN'F'D BY PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROV. R.I.', back-action lock with external hammer, walnut straight-hand butt-stock, iron butt-plate, iron under-lever, walnut three-quarter length fore-end with iron barrel-band, bayonet bar to muzzle and iron under-barrel clearing rod
Other Notes: This is one of 33,000 Peabodys delivered to France during the build-up to the Franco-Prussian war. The presence of German proofs indicates it was one of many captured or was perhaps part of war reparations by France to Germany.
