26in. nitro reproved barrels smoothbored to 28-bore from .450 / .400 black powder express, tubes engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. WINNERS OF ALL THE "FIELD" RIFLE TRIALS. LONDON.', replacement damascus rib, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 3/4 choke, some pitting, dents and bore dimensions marginal, slender action with removable striker bars, carved percussion fences and side-clips, elongated top strap, Jones patent rotary underlever, rebounding back-action locks, sliding safeties disabled and spurs removed, bold Royal scroll engraving, the lockplates with the makers name in an elaborate cartouche, action engraved 'CHARGE 3 DRAMS, .450 / .400 CASE 2 3/8 INCHES', 14 3/4in. figured pistolgrip stock (cracked through hand) with steel pistolgrip-cap and horn buttplate, fore-end with losses, weight 5lb. 11oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case with internal flap, the lid outer marked 'H. M. WILSON. 10TH HUSSARS', and with brass escutcheon engraved 'HOLMES CHAPEL. CHESHIRE', missing brass lock mechanism

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the rifle was made as a .400 double rifle for 'Wilson', but there is no additional information in the records, bar a memo dated 10th August 1900 for the fitting of a new fore-sight.

Joined Cheshire Yeomanry at age of 36 in 1896, Promoted Lt. 1898 whilst fighting in the Boer War, promoted Major 1905, 1910 promoted 2 I/C Cheshire Yeomanry, 1911 promoted Lt. Colonel, 1914 mobilised Cheshire Yeomanry. Fought Egypt & Libya where he was wounded and hospitalised 1916.
In 1917 the Military Order of Savoy, Cavalier, was conferred upon him by His Majesty the King of Italy for distinguished services rendered.
After the amalgamation of the Cheshire Yeomanry with the Shropshire Yeomanry to form the 10 King's Shropshire Light Infantry in 1917, the Cheshire yeomanry was reformed as a cavalry unit in 1920 with Wilson as an advisor. The regiment formed part of the 6th Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, and continued to fight on horseback until 1942, one of the last regiments of the British Army to do so.
