A NAPOLEONIC PRISONER OF WAR STRAW WORK CHEROOT CASE,

Product Details

A NAPOLEONIC PRISONER OF WAR STRAW WORK CHEROOT CASE,
circa 1810, of oval form with domed ends approx. 4 3/4in. total length, exterior straw work with typical fading and some minor losses, the interior remaining in bright condition

Other Notes: The dominance of the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars lead to an unprecedented number of French personnel being taken prisoner by the British. Prison ships anchored in Portsmouth and Plymouth were quickly oversubscribed and in 1797 the first dedicated prison was built at Norman Cross in Huntingdonshire. Conditions were harsh and those incarcerated found they could improve their quality of life by making objects from bone or straw which they were permitted to sell. Of the camps established, Norman Cross prisoners were particularly known for their fine straw plaited work, generally dyed with bright colours and set at varying angles to intensify the visual impact
