for 1817 with later conversion from flint to percussion, probably by the makers, with shortened 26 1/8in. twist iron barrels (traces of signature to top-rib) flambé needle engraving to the rib-end, platinum vents, acanthus scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved flat bar-action lock with stepped tail signed 'JNO. MANTON & SON' with 'PATENT' around the back of the hammers, figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture and period probably associated ebony ramrod
