Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed on the 11th August, 1876 for Col. W. H. Crompton-Stansfield of Esholt Hall.
Major-General William Henry Crompton-Stansfield (1836 - 1888) entered the Army at an early age, and served successively in the 42nd Highlanders, and the 11th Regiment of Foot where he was Captain in the 21st battalion. In the 42nd Highlanders he saw active service in the Crimea, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol, for which he received the usual medal and clasp, and also the Turkish medal, besides being mentioned in dispatches of the General in command, he was decorated for saving the regimental flag of the Black Watch during battle.
In 1873 he assumed the additional name of Stansfield on inheriting the Esholt estates of his uncle. In 1881 William was a Colonel in the infantry and a Temporary Half Pay Magistrate. In 1882 he was made, on retiring from the Army, an honorary Major-General.
He died, aged 52, on a shooting expedition on Buckden Moors following heart trouble.
