JAMES & LOWE, SHEFFIELD
AN IMMENSE BOWIE-KNIFE WITH LATER IVORY HILT,
the 15in. blade possibly circa 1900, false edged for the last 7 1/2in., scalloped back, the left hand side etched near the back-edge with 'JAMES LOWE SHEFFIELD' within a banner surrounded by a field of scrolls, the hollow ground lower section etched with a panel inscribed 'THE UNITED STATES, LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BRAVE, PROTECTED BY HER NOBLE AND BRAVE VOLUNTEERS' to the left hand side and 'AMERICANS ASK FOR NOTHING BUT WHAT IS RIGHT AND SUBMIT TO NOTHING THAT IS WRONG', the two inscriptions separated by crossed English and American flags beneath a seated eagle, probably later 1/4in. thick flat nickel-silver cross-guard with stylised trefoil quillions, later large polished ivory circa 1920 grips held by four rivets and bearing raised carvings of a horse's head to each side, full-size tang with milled edge bolsters, the blade with some mottled staining, no scabbard
