A 20-BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER-PISTOL, UNSIGNED, no visible serial number,
circa 1720 and almost certainly produced in Liege, Belgium, with 13 1/8in. swamped barrel carved in relief at the breech-end with scrolls and foliage above a grotesque mask and incorporating gilded detail, carved raised sighting plane with brass boat-shaped fore-sight (some mild pitting), makers mark 'GR' below touch-hole, tang with carved sighting groove and covered with an engraved brass plate, bevel-edged brass lockplate with border and foliate engraving inhabited by a monster, faceted pan, un-bridled frizzen, the hammer retained by an internal bolt, the external bolt head carved in the form of a lion's mask, walnut full-stock lightly carved around the ramrod channel and lock (repairs to butt and fore-end), carved and chased brass furniture including long-eared bulbous lion-masked brass butt-cap, pierced sideplate of foliage terminating in monster-heads, faceted trigger-guard and carved finial, irregular shaped vacant escutcheon surmounted by a putto-mask beneath a coronet, faceted ramrod thimbles and later brass tipped ramrod
