A 25-BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER-PISTOL, no visible serial number,
circa 1715, with 12in. swamped barrel, brass fore-sight, the breech section with relief chiselled scrolls surmounted with a running serpent extending down the barrel, rear of breech struck with the Utrecht mark and carved with a sighting groove extending along the top-tang, flat, border engraved bevel-edged lock signed 'PENTERMAN, UTRECHT' and further engraved with a reclining classical figure forwards of the hammer and foliage to the stepped tail, faceted pan, frizzen and hammer-jaws, lightly carved walnut full-stock with bulbous stepped grotesque masked brass butt-cap engraved with relief foliage above beaded lines, the long ears with extended engraved spurs, trigger-guard bow with a relief grotesque mask, pierced sideplate featuring two figures seated on marshall trophies and a grotesque mask, en-suite escutcheon to the wrist surmounted with a coronet, turned, faceted ramrod thimbles and probable original brass tipped wood ramrod (some bruising to wood and scattered shallow pitting to iron surfaces)

Other Notes: Barend Penterman was made a Burgher of Utrecht in 1679 or 1680 after producing and presenting his 'masterpiece' as a wheel-lock maker to the Guild. He also became a trustee of St Eloy's Hospital from 1692 until his death in 1723. Other career achievements were his being appointed Dean of the Smiths Guild in 1706-08, 1714-15, 1720 and again in 1722. His brothers Jan and Gerrit also became Burghers of Utrecht. Penterman's work featured heavily in the Visser collection, numbering at least 22 examples of singles and pairs
