circa 1800, probably Gardener, Newcastle, with 1in. 'barrel', with graduated iron 'snail' operating on a spring-loaded ratchet to the fore, squared brass-bodied central hammer boxlock action with traces of signature and engraving to both sides, walnut slab-sided butt (cracked at head) and iron trigger-guard bow also mounting the 'snail' release-lever
