27in. nitro reproved barrels (smoothbored from .450 black powder rifle calibre) with raised matt rib, open sights removed and replaced with flush dovetail insert, bead fore-sight, tubes engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. WINNERS OF ALL THE "FIELD" RIFLE TRIALS. LONDON. 1883', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 3/4 choke, interior pitted, Jones patent rotary-underlever, carved percussion fences, elongated top strap, rebounding back-action locks with bolted dolphin hammers (possible replacements), border engraving, brushed and reblued finish overall, 14in. figured pistolgrip stock, carved horn pistolgrip-cap, sling swivels removed, fore-end with grip-catch release lever, weight 7lb.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed as a '.450 back action rifle' in September 1885 for Viscount Boyne.
Gustavus Russell Hamilton-Russell, 8th Viscount Boyne (1830 - 1907) was born Gustavus Russell Hamilton and was educated at Eton. In 1850 his name was legally changed to Gustavus Russell Hamilton-Russell.
He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant of Shropshire, the office of Justice of the Peace for County Meath and County Durham. In 1858 he married Lady Katherine Frances Scott. He succeeded to the title of 8th Viscount Boyne, in the province of Leinster on 27 October 1872.
He died on 30 December 1907 at age 77 at Burwarton Hall, Shropshire, England. He was buried on 6 January 1908 at Brancepeth Castle, County Durham, England. His will was probated in April 1908, at over £668,000 gross, and £435,000 net.
