At this late stage in WWII Robert Churchill was suffering from exhaustion due to his extensive involvement with training the Home Guard and supplying suitable weapons for the SOE. Together with his letter, Mac Hastings enclosed some Sodium Amytol which at that time was being used for treating battle exhaustion. According to Hastings, taken as a pill the Sodium Amytol, "… sedates the mind" but "The average G.P. doesn't know anything about Barbiturates …" and Hastings warns "… they should not be used recklessly.".
