QUEEN VICTORIA and CHARLES LANCASTER & SONS,

Product Details

QUEEN VICTORIA and CHARLES LANCASTER & SONS, a) 1861 - This 153 year old insignia inscription was designed by Queen Victoria to accompany the pair of 40 bore breechloading Rifles Nos 3476-3477 built by Charles Lancaster & Sons for her husband, Prince Albert. This original insignia proof is presented now in a six-sided millennium box with the gold crest of arms of The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers, London. The insignia proof shows Queen Victoria's crown placed above her monogram which is inside a firmly clasped belt. (This clearly has a very personal meaning.) Around the edge of the clasped belt is written "VICTORIA TO ALBERT" and on the outside edge of the clasped belt are the words, in pencil, "Victoria R to Albert 26 Aug 1861". Sadly, Prince Albert died four months later.
b) 1861 - A photocopy of the page of Charles Lancaster's record book giving details of the pair of rifles Nos 3476-3477 ordered by Queen Victoria as a present for her husband and Consort, Prince Albert on his 42nd birthday. Also shown at the top of the page is the actual insignia inscription on sale with this Lot.
c) 1979 - Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang brochure featuring, on p2, the photograph of Queen Victoria's order for Prince Albert's pair of rifles Nos 3476-3477 and also showing the above insignia inscription.
(See p116-118 of Don Masters' book, ATKIN, GRANT & LANG)
