WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS
A RARE TELESCOPIC SIGHT, MODEL 'A5', no visible serial number,
circa 1911, with blued steel 3/4in. diameter, 15 3/4in. long body signed 'MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED 9. 1909 - A5', front focusing objective lens with knurled grip-bands and ranges, rear dismountable eye-piece, single post reticule, the front ring-mount operating in a groove running along the underside of the telescope body and designed for a 1/4in. dovetail block, auxilliary locking or repositioning ring, the rear mount with micro adjustable elevation and windage knobs and 'mouse-trap' tensioning spring
Other Notes: The Winchester 'A' range of telescopic sights were only manufactured for a short while with production ceasing in the 1920s. When released, this telescopic sight cost in excess of 10 times the purchase price of the average rifle from the same company. Wholly produced by Winchester, this sight should not be confused with the later 'B' series sights which were manufactured in Japan, with the only Winchester produced part being the front mount. The number after the letter in the model designation refers to the magnification.
