A GOOD LEATHER-COVERED BRASS THREE-DRAW TELESCOPE, MODEL 'THE LORD BURY', serial no. 6301,
circa 1880, with laquered brass body extending to 31 1/2in. approximately, the front section leather covered and signed on an applied plate 'THE LORD BURY TELESCOPE, J.H. STEWARD LTD 406 STRAND LONDON No. 6301' (details repeated on the ocular section), sliding ocular lens protector, slip-on laquered brass objective lens cover, the whole in fine condition COMPLETE WITH its leather slip-top transit case and shoulder-strap

Other Notes: James Henry Steward was primarily an optician and founded his business in 1852. The company produced a large range of items for military use and advertised in their catalogues that they produced instruments for 'Reconnoitring, Sketching, Night Marching, Signaling and Gun Laying'. They were well thought of with their work to such a standard that they were opticians to 'The British & Foreign Governments, the National Rifle Associations of England, India, Canada & the Colonies and the National Artillery Association. Also a jeweller and watchmaker, his business ceased at this address circa 1892.
