Product Details

A .50 CAPPING BREECH-LOADING PERCUSSION CARBINE, MODEL 'SMITHS PATENT', serial no. 10376,
circa 1865, with drop-down two-stage blued 21 1/2in. barrel, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, folding leaf rear-sight, plain receiver (traces of colour) marked 'ADDRESS POULTNEY & TRIMBLE, BALTIMORE, USA' the breech marked vertically 'SMITHS PATENT JUNE 23RD 1857', saddle ring and bar to the left hand side, walnut straight hand butt-stock, iron heel-plate and walnut splinter fore-end with iron barrel-band, good amount of finish

Other Notes: The Smith's patent carbine was one of the more successful designs of the American civil war, with over 30,000 being issued. Poultney & Trimble were probably the largest importer of arms at the time, and they acted as commission agents for these carbines. Unusually, this carbine is not marked by one of the three contractors, Massachusetts Arms Co, American Machine Works or more rarely, American Arms Co.
