circa 1790 with later conversion to percussion from flintlock by John Manton circa 1830, with heavy multi-grooved rifled octagonal twist iron 24 1/4in. barrel, the top-flat signed 'STAUDENMAYER, LONDON' in flowing script, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with additional folding leaf rear-sight, engraved bands and scrolls to the breech-block, scroll engraved top-tang, borderline and scroll engraved flat bar-action lock with top extension meeting the tang, the lock signed 'JNO. MANTON & SON PATENT, period wood inlet behind lockplate, sliding safe behind the scroll engraved hammer, clipped tail, figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist and formed wider at the toe than heel, raised cheek-piece, flat underside, engraved iron furniture including long-spurred heel-plate, trigger-guard bow with raised pistol-grip tang, under-barrel rib with plain thimbles and captive iron stirrup ramrod, TOGETHER WITH a John Manton & Son mahogany case, compartmented and lined in green baize for this rifle (some renewals) and containing a leather covered powder-flask, a nipple-key, a wad-punch and a later cleaning rod, the interior of lid with parchment 'John Manton' trade label
