HOLLAND & HOLLAND
A 12-BORE TOPLEVER 'SHOT & BALL' HAMMERGUN, serial no. 17172,
28in. black powder reproved (pre1896 marks) barrels with raised matt sight rib and slightly ramped bead fore-sight, tubes engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, carved percussion fences, rebounding back-action locks, possible replacement hammers, border engraving, 14 1/4in. rechequered and ink enhanced stock including steel buttplate, fore-end re-chequered and with Deeley & Edge patent release catch, weight 6lb. 13oz.

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that gun no. 17172 does feature in the records, however the entry is virtually blank, listing the gun simply as '12-bore ball gun' and no further details of the gun or for whom it was made. A small reference at the base of the page references 'Paradox'. The date of manufacture is circa 1893 based on entries in the records either side of this one.
Two sets of black powder marks on the barrels, both dating to the 1887 - 1896 period, the first set with 'RCHOKE' suggest the gun may have initially begun life as a Paradox, then the rifled chokes removed and reproved as a smooth bore gun.
