A 12-BORE 'B GRADE' SIDELEVER SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 20976,
30in. replacement nitro barrels (circa 1977), rib gold-inlaid '1' at the breech end, tubes engraved 'SPECIALLY MADE FOR HOLLAND & HOLLAND GUN NO. 20976', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 3/4 choke, top-tang gold-inlaid '1', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, border and acanthus scroll engraving, the underside with 'PATENT EJECTOR', brushed bright finish, 14 1/2in. figured replacement stock, fore-end with Deeley & Edge patent release catch, weight 6lb. 14oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed on the 23rd September 1903 as a '12-bore No.2 hammerless ejector with 30in. damascus barrels' for a Mr G.H. Caton Haigh.
George Henry Caton Haigh, FZS, MBOU, DL (1860-1941) was a renowned ornthologist and authority on Himalayan flowering trees and exotic plants. His manuscript collection is currently lodged with the Natural History Museum in London.
