Other Notes: A Rare & Interesting 577/45 Martini Henry Mk II Service Rifle Marked To The British South Africa Company Rhodesia. The action is stamped with the L.A.C. (London Armoury Co) Crown VR cypher and dated 1888. This rifle was produced under Ordnance contract for the British Army, then given over to the B.S.A.C. This company was set up by Cecil Rhodes and given a government charter very similar to that given to the East India Co. centuries before, its purpose being the settlement of South Central Africa, now Zambia and Zimbabwe, formally Northern & Southern Rhodesia. In 1890 a pioneer column of 200 settlers and 500 armed police of the South Africa Co. entered Mashonaland under the command of Lt. Col. Pennefather of the 6th Dragoon Guards. All were armed with Martini-Henry rifles of which this was one.
