* A SCARCE AMERICAN PATTERN 1873 SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR 'TROWEL' BAYONET,
circa 1874, with broad 10in. concave spear-point blade, the underside with a central rib, moulded socket with five bands of rolled engraving, the right side marked 'PAT APR 16th 72', mortise locking ring to rear (frozen, the whole darkly stained, missing scabbard)
Other Notes: Designed to bridge the gap between bayonets and entrenching tools, a walnut plug could be inserted in the handle to aid grip. This was the only trowel bayonet ever produced in significant numbers with 10,706 manufactured.
