A RARE, POSSIBLY UNIQUE .500 EXP CONVERSION OF A WHITWORTH MATCH RIFLE, no visible serial number,
converted circa 1895, with blued round tapering 34 5/8in. barrel, the top near breech bearing the stamp 'WHITWORTH, MANCHESTER' surrounding the bushel and crown trademark, re-rifled in 'Enfield' style, dove-tail block at muzzle for a micro adjustable fore-sight, elevated mount for rear-sight, short moulded top and side-ribs, the right hand side-cheek at breech signed 'CONVERTED BY T. BLAND & SONS, 430 WEST STRAND, LONDON', the top-rib with dolls-head extension, plain colour-hardened receiver (much colour remaining, one extractor horn loose), the top-tang with provision for a vernier rear-sight, colour-hardened bar-action lock signed 'MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO.', sliding safe forwards of the hammer, finely chequered capped pistol-grip walnut butt-stock, coarsely chequered iron heel-plate, 'Jones' type swing under-lever opening, finely chequered walnut splinter fore-end with swing lever take-down catch and moulded horn tip, the whole retaining much finish and appearing little used since its conversion; COMPLETE WITH a black leatherette-covered hinge-lidded box containing a full suite of sights for this rifle including two vernier tang sights, with a note on sighting options penned on the reverse of a period T. Bland business card.
