A RARE .750 FLINTLOCK SINGLE-SHOT MUSKET, no visible serial number,
dated for 1777 and manufactured during the American War of Independence, with a possibly shortened 38in. round iron barrel, marked at breech 'MS' over '1777' (for Massachusetts), solid flared top-tang, military style plain lock signed forwards of the hammer 'MOSES BABCOCK', cast-off walnut handrail three-quarter butt-stock, carved apron around the top-tang, inlet brass escutcheon to wrist, brass heel-plate, trigger-guard and side-plate, brass ramrod throat and two rolled end thimbles (worn), brass fore-end tip (split) and replacement ramrod, losses to edges of fore-end, majority of the barrel cross-pins missing
Other Notes: Only operating between 1777 and 1781, Moses Babcock produced muskets in Charlestown, Massachusetts primarily for the rebel forces. Examples of his work are seldom encountered
