Product Details
A 17mm BREECH-LOADING SINGLE-SHOT SERVICE-RIFLE, UNSIGNED, MODEL '1853/67 TABATIERE', serial no. 542,
French circa 1868, with 39in. barrel, blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, swing-open breech-block with guide ramp running into the wrist, plain hump-back lock with side-hammer, walnut three-quarter stock, iron furniture and iron under-barrel ramrod
Other Notes: The Tabatiere was basically a French interpretation of the English Snider, although the French never acknowledged that (or paid any royalties to Jacob Snider). Made by converting existing Chassepot rifles, the design was soon found to be inferior and it was quickly relegated to rear echelon troops. Despite the large numbers produced, it is seldom encountered today because the majority of surplus arms were converted into a cheap single-barrelled shotgun called the 'Zulu'.
