Other Notes: Conceived by Colonel John Jacob as a suitable arm for his locally raised regiments in Jacobabad, these interesting rifles only saw very limited field use in India. Weighing in at a not inconsiderable 11lbs they were somewhat unwieldy, and ballistically they had more in common with the obsolete Brunswick rifle than the then current Minie rifle. The service life of these rifles coincided with a period of popularity in India for explosive bullets with Jacob famously designing such a missile. Jacob raised a regiment of cavalry known as Jacob's Horse in 1846 and two regiments of infantry in 1857 known as Jacob's Rifles, both units being incorporated in the regular Indian Army respectively in 1860 and 1861. Jacob died in Jacobabad in December 1858 before delivery of his now famous rifle began.
