A 12-BORE EASY-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 4829,
29in. nitro barrels, rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 73, ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, right bore dimension marginal, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, best fine bouquet and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 1/8in. highly-figured stock, weight 6lb. 9oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed for Rear Admiral E. S. Poe as a '12-bore top snap hammerless ejector gun'. The date is unclear, but reference is made to the gun being re-stocked in December 1902. Poe was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1901.
Admiral Sir Edmund Samuel Poe, GCVO KCB (11th Sept 1849 - 1st April 1921) was educated at Burney's Royal Naval Academy and joined the Royal Navy in 1862. He held the position of Naval Advisor to the Inspector-General of Fortifications in 1889 and became Commander of the Training Squadron in 1897-1899

He was appointed command of the battleship 'Victorious' on the 8th June 1897 and later that year, assumed command of the first class protected cruiser 'St. George'
Appointed a Naval Aide de Camp to the Queen on the 13th July 1899 and appointed command of the St George again, as Commodore 2nd Class in October of the same year.
