probably French or English circa 1690, with 13in. clip-point blade false edged for the last 6in. (patchy dark staining), deeply struck makers mark of a flambé sword cutting a rock to the left hand side, moulded brass cross-guard with quillions formed as helmeted male heads, tapering hardwood grip swelling to the fore, tapering brass pommel-cap with helmeted male head finial, no scabbard
