C.M. SMITHERS, PORTSMOUTH
AN 1827 PATTERN ROYAL NAVY LEVEE'S OR ENSIGN'S SWORD,
circa 1875, with diminutive straight double-edged and double-fullered 26 3/4in. stiletto blade, etched with scrolls, Royal crests, naval motifs and arabesques for the first three-fifths of its length, makers details of 'C.M SMITHERS, OUTFITTERS, PORTSMOUTH' etched at ricasso, inlet proof-mark to reverse, solid brass half-basket hilt of small size with folding inner guard and scabbard-lock, the exterior carved with gothic panels and a fouled anchor below a Victorian crown, white wire-bound rayskin hilt, the carved back-strap terminating in a lion's head pommel, complete with its black leather brass mounted scabbard (blade lightly worn with some dark staining, drag replaced on scabbard)
