circa 1880, with Wilkinson-style 32in. slightly curved blade etched for two-thirds of its length with scroll and arabesques, including the legend 'VOLUNTEER ENGINEERS', inlet proof-mark and makers details at ricasso, pierced brass half-basket hilt (strong traces of gilding), decorated with carved acanthus leaves, wire-bound sharkskin grip, partially chequered back-strap with integral chequered domed pommel, complete with its bright steel service scabbard
