A RARE CUSTOMS & EXCISE BALE-PROBE 'SWORD-STICK', serial no. 27,
first half of the 19th century, the tapering cylindrical 23in. iron probe concealed within a stout natural hazel stick scabbard, twin broad brass bands at join, both concealed faces stamped '27', the natural hazel hilt stamped 'CUSTOMS & EXCISE', approximately 36in. overall
Other Notes: Whilst undoubtedly making an effective weapon, the primary purpose of these sticks was to probe bales and sacks for concealed contraband
