A COLLECTABLE PACKET OF TEN INERT .577 RIFLE MUZZLE LOADING CARTRIDGES In their string tied paper packet (mild discolouration and fragile structure commensurate with age) and bearing faded printing listing it's contents as "For Enfield Rifles .577 Bore, Manufactured by Eley Brothers Ltd London"
The example whilst of obvious external age is however from a small number of packets (following lots) from which several were removed and on opening found to contain inert material in place of the 2 1/2 dram black powder charge listed. Additionally the bullets contained are of cast as opposed to being of swaged construction. The purpose of this is unclear whether intended historically to deceive or for other purposes such as inert salesmans samples or some form of training aid for loading drill practice, they may even be a former collectors re-pack following deterioration of the original internal contents at some time past. The reason must remain open to speculation, however it does represent a rare opportunity to acquire an inert example packet for collection/display purposes.
