Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was ordered as No.1 of a pair on the 6th May 1930, by Marshall C. Field of New York, for Mrs Coats.
Audrey Evelyn James Coats (1902 - 1968) was a society beauty, and friend of the Prince of Wales. She (firstly) married Captain Muir Coats of the Scots Guards in 1922, divorcing in 1927. She then married Marshall Field III in August 1930.
Marshall Field III (1893 - 1956) was an American investment banker, publisher, philanthropist, and heir to the Marshall Field department store fortune. It could be assumed that Marshall ordered the pair of guns as a wedding gift for his soon-to-be wife.
