circa 1873, with 36in. sighted barrel, rolling-block action with slab-sided receiver, special hammer (see below), top-tang with three line Remington signature address and patents, walnut butt-stock with iron heel-plate, three-quarter walnut fore-end with three iron barrel-bands and under-barrel iron clearing rod
Other Notes: In 1872 the State of New York's Militia Commission held its own trials for breech loading rifles. At this trial it was decided that the Remington Rolling Block design was the best rifle with which to arm the New York National Guard, provided a couple of modifications were implemented. The Commission stipulated that a safety device should be fitted and the the action was therefore produced with a new locking system that moved the hammer to the half-cock position rendering the arm safe as the action was closed. This obviously required the hammer to be fully re-cocked before firing, so the hammer spur was also increased in size to render this easier. A total of 15,000 rifles and carbines were ordered, although to what proportions the mix was is unknown. They remained in service until 1896.
