A RARE WILLIAM TRANTER 12-BORE 1882 PATENT 'THE CARLTON TREBLE SAFETY HAMMERLESS GUN' TRIGGERPLATE-ACTION NON-EJECTOR, serial no. 586, 30in. nitro reproved damascus barrels (dented), 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 1/2 choke, Tranter patent action, patent no. 1881 of 1882 with automatic triple bolting safety, (acting on tumblers, sears and triggers), with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail (at fault), triggerplate action, border and acanthus scroll engraving, 13 3/4in. figured stock including buttplate, weight 6lb. 7oz.
Other Notes: : Though patented by William Tranter, patent 1881 was offered for sale as 'The Carlton' by his son-in-law T.W. Watson. It was marketed as a huge step forward in gun making for its ease of opening and closing (and wear reduction) and with its new 'Jar Check' for the new level of safety offered for a hammerless gun. Watson also claimed that the new 'patent concentric' barrels 'give better shooting than any hitherto attained' and were 'specially bored to shoot with ordinary paper cases and Kynoch's perfect metallic cases'. When Tranter retired at the age of 69 in 1885, he leased his premises to George Kynoch and the guns produced there (over a just a five year period) were sold under the name 'Kynoch Gun Factory'.
