30in. replacement nitro barrels (by the makers, barrel numbers 5569 / 70), ribs engraved 'BOSS & CO., 73, ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', the breech ends gold-inlaid with '1*' and '2*', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 choke in both (No.1*) and imp. cyl. in both (No.2*), No.1 bore dimensions marginal, wall thicknesses below recommended minimum, toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, Boss 1894 improved patent single-triggers, rolled-edge triggerguards, best acanthus scroll and floral bouquet engraving, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, No.1 fore-end with repairs,15in. boldly-figured stocks, weight 6lb. 10oz. Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this pair was originally ordered as part of a trio, on March 25th, 1899 by Lord Cecil Manners with steel barrels and single triggers.

Lord Cecil Reginald John Manners (1868 - 1945) was a British Conservative politician. He was the second son of John Manners, 7th Duke of Rutland, by his second marriage to Janetta, daughter of Thomas Hughan. Henry Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland, was his half-brother and Lord Edward Manners his brother.

Manners died in September 1945, aged 77, killed by a train at Crowborough railway station.
