Product Details
AN EXTREMELY RARE TRIPLE-COMBED BURGONET,
most probably Italian circa 1540, the skull formed in one piece with side-hinged ear-pieces, the top of the helmet with three low combs, each decorated with rope-twist carving, the bowl pierced at regular intervals possibly for a now absent material covering, narrow turned up visor and neck-guard, painted red internally to preserve (small loss and crack to visor flange, cleaned)
Other Notes: Triple combed burgonets similar to the one presented here were worn by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles 5th's personal escort (reigned 1519-1556), and were usually equipped with a burgundy coloured velvet cover sewn over the skull and ear pieces. The renaissance artist Titian shows this in a group portrait of Charles with some of his escort.
