31in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrel with fine acanthus scroll detailing at the breech end and engraved 'STEPHEN GRANT. 67A. ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chamber, bored approx. 1/4 choke, Henry patent falling block action, patent no. 1071 of 7th April 1865, A H action and barrel number 3803, cranked right hand back-action lockplate signed 'STEPHEN GRANT', the action, lockplate and furniture profusely engraved with fine acanthus scrollwork, retaining some original colour-hardening, 14 1/4in. highly-figured stock with steel heel and toe plates, the gold oval escutcheon bearing ducal crown, bolstered fore-end with reinforcing plate, cross-pin release catch and horn finial, weight 7lb. 1oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was made for His Grace the Duke of Marlborough in 1873.
John Winston Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough (1822 - 1883) was a British Conservative cabinet minister, and was the paternal grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill.
He was president of the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners' Royal Benevolent Society for many years. He died suddenly of angina pectoris at 29 Berkeley Square, London, on 5 July 1883. After lying in state at Blenheim Palace, he was buried in the private chapel on 10 July.
