J. VENABLES & SON .410 (SMOOTHBORED) SINGLE-BARRELLED HAMMER ROOK RIFLE, serial no. 639, 25 1/2in. nitro reproved heavy octagonal barrel, sighs removed and dovetail insert, the top flat engraved 'J. VENABLES & SON. ST. ALDATE STREET. OXFORD' (rubbed), and with engraved border and flourish of acanthus scroll, 2 1/2in. chamber, non-rebounding central hammer, the action and furniture engraved with fine acanthus scroll engraving, retaining some finish, 14 1/4in. figured straight-hand stock, bolstered fore-end with horn finial, weight 5lb. 2oz.
