GIEVE, MATTHEWS & SEAGROVE LTD, PORTSMOUTH
AN 1827 PATTERN BRITISH NAVAL SWORD, no visible serial number,
circa World War One, with slightly curved Wilkinson type 31 1/2in. blade etched for the majority of its length with arabesque panels of scrolls, the centre of the right hand side with a Royal Crest, the left with a fouled anchor surmounted with a King's crown (some minor stains), the forte with 'BY APPOINTMENT' together with 'GIEVE MATTHEWS & SEAGROVE LTD, PORTSMOUTH, LONDON & DEVONPORT, the back edge with the number '2', gilded brass gothic half-basket hilt with moulded King's crown and fouled anchor device, the pommel carved with a lions head, white wire-bound sharkskin grip and fold-down inner guard, together with its brass mounted black leather scabbard, the throat with an embossed shield bearing the makers details, and remnants of a bullion sword knot.
