Provenance: this shotgun was formerly the property of Wing Commander Victor Arthur Stapley of 166th Squadron based in Kirmington.
One of Stapleys most memorable days was the daring raid on Nuremberg. On a cloudless night some 800 aircraft made their way over to Nuremberg and met with heavy anti-aircraft flak and German attack planes. After counting 25 downed bombers Wing Commander Stapley told his crew to stop counting and focus on the mission or they too could be shot down. Hiding amongst the con-trails Stapley managed to guide his crew to the target zone and safely return home. 96 planes were lost on the mission.
