Other Notes: Donald Dallas has kindly supplied us with details of research he has undertaken on this unusual case:
THOMAS BOSS TWO TIER GUN CASE FOR GUNS NO. 640 AND NO. 1476
This case was originally housed a tubelock double gun no. 640 of 1845, it had Parkin barrels. This gun was ordered by A.L. Goddard, The Lawn, Swindon. He also gave his address as 38 Jermyn Street, London. Goddard appears to have had a Lancaster gun and I think this was fitted into this case.
On the 9th July 185, Goddard ordered a double 13-bore no. 1476 "to be fitted in Mr. Goddard's own tray case to be refurbished as new. To be finished not later than 7th August. Mr. Goddard will take £10 for his Lancaster gun and not less. Mr. Goddard made a present of this gun to his brother Mr. F.J. Goddard, 80th Regiment. Weight 6Ibs 14oz. £15 allowed for old tubelock gun by Boss."
The number "640" appears to have been the only number stamped on the case prior to "1476". The case dates from 1845 and when it was refurbished in 1856, the more up to date Boss label was pasted over the original label. When no. 1476 was put in the case, no 640 was sold back to Boss and it appears that only no. 1476 was resident in the case
