Provenance: The vendor has kindly provided us with the following information:
My father bought the gun in the mid 70s in the Outer Hebrides (Benbecula), while he was posted up there as a civilian. He managed to track down the company G Lewis (now closed) he paid them a visit and from there records they discovered there were only 12 of these 10 bores ever commissioned from the 1880s, for a wild fowling syndicate (from memory I cannot remember which one). My father tried tracing other owners but came up with none, so as far as we know this is the only surviving one out of the 12. It will be interesting to know if any more have survived or are still been used?
When my father retired, he was going to restore it back to its former glory. But shortly after retirement ill health struck, and he only got as far as striking the barrels back a bit. It was then passed to me 4 years ago where I was going to continue the work, but work and family commitments left it untouched.
