circa 1864, with blued 36in. heavy round tapering barrel, the top signed at breech 'WHITWORTH, MANCHESTER' around the wheatsheaf trademark, square dove-tailed fore-sight mounting-block, the rear-sight base signed along the right hand side 'MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO', colour hardened squared breech-block, short carved sighting rib, plain colour-hardened top-tang with applied dove-tail mount, plain bar-action lock (traces of colour) signed 'MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO.', chequered walnut figured pistol-grip half-stock, chequered iron heel-plate, moulded horn pistol-grip cap, serial number to the lower tang, chequered trigger blade and smooth rounded horn fore-end tip with no provision for ramrod, all sights absent but complete with its probably original canvas storage case painted in black bitumen, the interior compartmented and lined in green baize and containing a cleaning rod, spring cramp, Whitworth mould (numbered 549), nipple cleaning set, brush and a sporting gun
