W. R. PAPE 16-BORE 1874 PATENT TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 4247, for 1887, 30in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels (in 2012, the rib engraved 'W. R. PAPE, NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE. WINNER OF THE LONDON GUN TRIALS IN 1858. 1859. 1866 & 1875' (likely refreshed), bored approx. 1/2 and 1/4 choke, some dents, wall thicknesses below and well below recommended minimum, Pape patent treble-grip action with slender faceted toplever, patent no. 1645 of 9th May 1874, carved percussion fences and button strikers, rebounding sidelocks with carved hammers, fine acanthus scroll engraving, retaining traces of colour-hardening and finish, the triggerguard with the Pape pinfire gun trademark, 14 1/2in. stock (possibly historic replacement) with insert repair to right overhorn and with engraved steel heel and toe plates, fore-end with ornate chequering bordering and fluted tip with Anson push rod release (stiff), weight 5lb. 15oz.
